MR. CONTRERAS

Cutie Pis Advisor

My name is Brandon Contreras. Students and parents call me Mr. C.

I am a UCLA math alumnus, former UCLA Teacher Education Program student, and proud Compton Unified School District teacher.

Social justice will always be at the core of my pedagogy and practice. It is not something I teach; it is something I live.

For the past nine years, I have given my time, energy, dedication, and enthusiasm to the students of East Compton. I love this community. I will never take for granted the opportunity I have to make positive and meaningful impact every day I show up to work.

When I see a need, I do what I can. I have coached boys and girls basketball teams, track teams, tutored after school, created district-wide math curriculum, and led school site leadership teams. I am also a member of the Compton Male Teachers of Color Network and have built and run an after-school music and video program for the kids at Whaley Middle School.

However, it is this club, Cutie Pis of D-High, where I feel I am making my biggest contribution. As an 8th grade teacher, I see first-hand when self-expectations begin to change for female students in math and science classes. The disparity between males and females who participate and succeed in these areas is a problem worth working on. As I wrote in Our Story, this club was created as a responsibility to the students I serve.

I am so appreciative of every person who has helped make this club a success. With the support they get through community and mentorship, the Cutie Pis are top students in their school.

I will continue to do my part, find opportunities, and help them build a strong network of mentors and role-models. Please contact me if you would like to help out. Thank you.

I owe much of my credit to my students. Many of them became the founding members of this club.
